A concrete response to helping women achieve financial independence

The Citi-Tsao Foundation Financial Education Programme for Mature Women will reach out to 2,800 women, 40 to 55 years old. These women are financially vulnerable with monthly household incomes ranging from $1,200 to $2,000. They belong to the following categories:

   1. Married and working to help supplement the household income
   2. Housewives with the potential to earn extra income
   3. Single working women

It aims to develop the capability of these women to be financially independent. They will learn how to save, plan, grow their small surpluses and negotiate successfully.

This program will also encourage wider community awareness and responsiveness concerning issues impacting the economic and social independence of vulnerable women.

Why a financial education programme designed specifically for women? Why a financial education programme designed specifically for women?

Women know their dollars.
Women save and those without savings recognize the need and have the desire to save if there were surplus. This is one of the highlights of a study conducted by Tsao Foundation, Citi and the National University of Singapore to find out how Singaporean women, aged 40 to 55 manage financially amidst rising cost of living.

Managing their budgets is an uncomplicated exercise. It is based on prudence and a clear priority for children’s education and basic safety nets such as life and health insurance.

Most women seem to live by a common mantra:
“No debt. No worry. Live simply.”

And a new ethos has set in among mothers:
“No expectation of children’s money in retirement.”

Behind such strong and independent outlook, retrenchment and prolonged illness in the retirement years is a major concern.

While generally prudent, mature women find “planning” as unnecessary and vague. They would rather leave it to fate as it is difficult to foresee the future.
Women NEED to know MORE about their dollars.
